Supernumerary Information
Supernumeraries are people of all ages who share the stage with operatic artists. Supers volunteer their time and act as 'extras' on the stage. Supers can play soldiers, townspeople, nuns, gypsies as well as many other important stage-filling roles. A super's enthusiasm and cooperation is an important part of any operatic production.
Auditions for the 2008-2009 season will take place on May 27 and May 28, 2008 at the Harrison Opera House in downtown Norfolk from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. each day. You will be provided with a scene or scenes to improvise for your audition.

Production Assistant
Virginia Opera seeks a production assistant for the 2008-2009 season. The position entails working closely with the company manager and the production staff administering the day to day tasks of producing opera in three markets. This is a part-time hourly position averaging 30 hours per week, with benefits including participation in Virginia Opera's health insurance plan, vacation and sick leave. Ideal candidates will have previous production experience, strong organizational and communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and possess a valid driver’s license. Event Coordinator (June 2008 - March 2009)
The Virginia Opera Guild is seeking a professional event coordinator to assist in the organization, planning and execution of Virginia Opera's Annual Gala.
Background:
The Virginia Opera Guild is a division of Virginia Opera, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. The Guild has hosted an annual gala for the past five years with attendance ranging from 150-200 guests, each gala having generated between $40,000-$90,000 net profit, which is donated to Virginia Opera. The next gala is scheduled for February 21, 2009 at the Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, VA. The Guild's Gala Steering Committee has chosen “Italia” as its 2009 theme to coincide with Virginia Opera's 2008-2009 Season of Italian operas. The event coordinator will assist in organizing, managing and executing the Gala. Additionally, the incumbent will provide counsel in identifying and procuring corporate sponsors and increasing attendance.
Tasks to be accomplished:
- Identify appropriate subcommittees to be established to execute a successful 2009 Virginia Opera Gala
- Work with Virginia Opera Guild Chair, Gala Chair and Gala Chair Subcommittees to establish expected outcomes and budget for 2009 Virginia Opera Gala
- Develop, with input from Virginia Opera Gala Marketing Subcommittee, marketing plan to complement the chosen theme
- Work with the Virginia Opera Gala Chair and relevant subcommittees to oversee the identification, solicitation, procurement and recognition of sponsors for 2009 Virginia Opera Gala
- Procure service vendors
- Manage chosen vendors to ensure services are performed professionally and timely, coordinate payment of chosen vendors
- Develop, coordinate and orchestrate fundraising auctions
- Provide on-site support at 2009 Virginia Opera Gala to ensure seamless execution of event from set-up to lock-up
The contract period is June 2008 through March 2009. Contract fees and payments are negotiable.
How to submit a proposal:
Proposals are due by May 15, 2008 and should include the following:
- Description of qualifications and experience;
- An implementation plan for tasks noted in description above;
- A firm estimate of fees;
- Names and resumes of any subcontractors;
- Contact information for three clients served during the last 18 months.
