Messages for the Maestro from Virginia Opera's Special Friends

The Virginia Symphony musicians and I send our warmest wishes to Maestro Peter Mark as we celebrate
his 100th production as conductor for the Virginia Opera. His musicianship, leadership, imagination and dedication
to excellence have brought decades of operatic treasure to our region.  Congratulations Peter from all of us!

The Opera is a treasure to Norfolk and the State of Virginia.  The Virginia Arts Festival is proud of our collaborations
with Virginia Opera. Best wishes to Peter and Virginia Opera for continued success.
— Rob Cross, Executive and Artistic Director  ·   Virginia Arts Festival

Peter Mark has improved the cultural life of Hampton Roads immeasurably during his time with Virginia Opera.
Our city is much richer for its work and we all look forward to another great season ahead.
— Chris Hanna, Artistic Director  ·   Virginia Stage Company

I cannot remember when I first met Peter, but it was many years ago. His reputation had preceded him, but even so I was most struck by his enthusiasm and his complete belief in what he was doing. I know that many people have worked hard for Virginia Opera, but I really believe that without his drive and belief we would not have the outstanding company that we have today. His combination of artistic originality and financial common sense have been critical to Virginia Opera's success. It is an unusual combination.

One feature of his work that has always impressed me has been his care for and ability to develop and coach young singers. I have heard so many of the singers, both Spectrum artists and main stage, say how critical and beneficial Peter's help has been to them. This coupled with Peter's real talent at detecting new or hidden ability and bringing it out has been one of the striking aspects of the Opera.

Personally I have learnt a great deal about opera and the staging of it by attending rehearsals in the Harrison Opera House. It has been an educational experience that I have much valued. Peter's comments are to the point and perceptive. He does not seem to have much doubt about his judgments. But why should he. He is right! Seriously, we owe him a huge debt for having brought real, top class opera into our lives and for making us share his enthusiasm. Life in Virginia has a new dimension a result.

— E. John Field,
Virginia Opera Board President (2004-2006)

Bill and I met Peter Mark shortly after we moved here from Hawaii in 1977.  We arrived in the dead of winter, the coldest on record. My immediate thought was, “I wonder how Edie Harrison persuaded this young gentleman to come to Norfolk from sunny California?"

Peter's persona was immediately contagious so full of spirit, so enthusiastic, so well spoken and smart.  Needless to say, he has given the McArees many hours of operatic pleasure, but his most unforgettable performance happened right after 9/11.  In his inimitable, vibrant fashion, Peter arrived in the orchestra pit, turned with a bow to the applauding audience, and a quick turn to the orchestra, then conducted the most moving rendition of “God Bless America” ever heard.

Everyone jumped to their feet and began singing. We all sang with heavy hearts and tears streaming down our cheeks. For me it was a turning point; I was alive again and able to feel once more.

There is truly magic in the music.

— Rose McAree, Virginia Opera Board Member

While Peter Mark is probably one of the greatest impresarios and maestros that Tidewater Virginia has ever known, my first and lasting memories are of the times I first met him. He called me and he was going something like 80 miles per hour in a 40 mile zone. I was a younger lawyer and I think at that time was probably the best one to be representing him. Of course, as always I had a good result and Peter Mark became a fan of Peter Decker. As time went on Peter Decker definitely became President of Peter Mark’s Fan Club. Because he led the Virginia Opera I, of course, didn’t charge him a fee. I guess he wanted to take advantage of that and therefore got a series of speeding tickets throughout the Tidewater area. Indeed, I got him off of each of those tickets. So, therefore, my first impression of Peter Mark was that he was not only the most talented of the Virginia Opera leaders but also the fastest and the speediest. No one will ever exceed Peter Mark in either one of those regards.

My wife Bess and I are so happy that Virginia Opera was able to have Peter Mark as its leader. He has certainly exceeded each and every goal and dream that our opera could have hoped to achieve.

— Peter G. Decker, Jr.,
Friend and Supporter of Virginia Opera

Some years ago I was conducting an Elderhostel group through the lobby after giving them a backstage tour. Peter happened to be walking in the lobby and I stopped him and introduced our Maestro to this group of about 30 people. He could not have been more gracious. Completely extemporaneously, he entertained the group with tales of the Harrison Opera House, Virginia Opera’s history, etc., and then answered questions from the fascinated group. I was so proud to be part of Virginia Opera's family which has such an open and charming Artistic Director.

The Elderhostel people are well educated, sophisticated, and from all over the United States. I am sure their accidental meeting with Peter Mark will stay in their memories and they will tell friends about what a superb opera community we have.

— Julia Stevens, Virginia Opera Guild

Peter Mark indeed is awesome and unique. He is so remarkably talented and knowledgeable, yet so humble and approachable, and so ready to share his amazing store of knowledge and experience. His wife is incredibly gifted also, yet neither husband nor wife takes undue advantage of the other, allowing each to be at their best. Virginia Opera, and we who love it, are blessed to be able to enjoy the time and watchfulness they share with us. Our community and State are richer for their contributions. I am grateful for their friendship.
